Operation
We Remember

Remembering and honoring Alabama veterans who have died by suicide.

Operation We Remember

Operation We Remember is a statewide veteran suicide prevention awareness campaign led by the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs in partnership with state and federal government agencies, colleges and universities, municipalities statewide, and other partnering organizations across Alabama. Established in September 2022, the campaign honors and remembers Alabama veterans lost to suicide while encouraging meaningful conversations about mental health, connection and the importance of reaching out for support.

Through visual displays of American flags, Operation We Remember honors the lives and legacies of Alabama veterans lost to suicide while bringing attention to the often-invisible challenges facing veterans, service members and their families. In 2026, the campaign will display 150 American flags, representing the 150 Alabama veterans who died by suicide in 2024. Each flag represents a life, a family, a story and a reminder of the importance of connection, support and access to resources.

Through these displays and continued outreach, the campaign aims to honor those we have lost, raise awareness of veteran suicide and encourage conversations that help veterans and their families know they are connected to a community of support.

Alabama's Challenge

Operation We Remember is an initiative of Alabama's Challenge, a statewide effort focused on preventing suicide among service members, veterans and their families through awareness, connection and community support.

The Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs works alongside state agencies, community organizations and partners to encourage conversations about mental health, recognize the challenges facing veterans and connect Alabama's veteran community with available resources and support.
