CSM Bennie G. Adkins State Veterans Home Completed Room

Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs (ADVA) Commissioner Jeffrey Newton is happy to report the Command Sgt. Maj. Bennie G. Adkins State Veterans Home in Enterprise remains on track to reopen in Fall 2026.

The facility began extensive restoration following a fire on April 16, 2025, which smoldered for multiple days before being fully extinguished. All 90 veteran residents were evacuated safely and transported to the Enterprise Health and Rehabilitation Center, where they have received support and care from the veterans’ home staff.

“As I said a year ago, we cannot say enough about the response from first responders across the entire Wiregrass,” Commissioner Newton said. “Again, you pray these types of events never occur, but the response that night and since from ADVA, HMR of Alabama, Governor Ivey and her staff, first responders, and leadership at the Enterprise Health and Rehabilitation Center has been incredible.”

The restoration process has been extensive, covering 75 percent of the facility and including the complete replacement of various electrical systems. To restore operations, it was necessary to complete mitigation, targeted demolition, and reconstruction of fire and water-impacted areas, along with comprehensive interior and exterior repairs.

As progress continues, the latest milestones have included replacing all necessary roofing, restoring power and air to the building, and removing the moisture barrier required for much of the interior work. The installation of flooring, sheetrock, paint, tile, lighting, and millwork continues. The mechanical, electrical, and plumbing trades continue to coordinate to achieve their established milestones.

The project is expected to be completed under the initial $50 to $60 million estimate announced in July 2025 and remains on track to be concluded within the 12- to 14-month timeline provided at that time.

“We look forward to welcoming our veterans residents back home and remain deeply grateful to Enterprise Health and Rehabilitation Center and HMR of Alabama for their continued partnership and unwavering commitment to our veterans during this process,” Commissioner Newton said. “Their willingness to stand alongside ADVA, not just in moments of crisis but every day, reflects the true spirit of service and compassion that makes a lasting difference in the lives of those we serve.”
