SPANISH FORT, Ala. – The Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery at Spanish Fort will resume committal and memorial services beginning June 15.  Since March 23, the cemetery has conducted direct interments without public services after precautionary measures were imposed at the cemetery in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The cemetery will continue to follow protective measures to reduce the risk of spreading the COVID-19 virus by limiting interments to family members and friends, physical distancing between individuals not from the same household, encouraging those who attend committal services to wear face coverings, and by asking individuals to stay home if they are exhibiting symptoms of a cold or flu.  Access to the cemetery’s administrative office and other facilities will remain limited to cemetery staff as an additional protective measure.

Families that were unable to attend a committal service between March 23 and June 14 can arrange to hold a service either on or after June 15. Families with interments scheduled on or after June 15 will be offered the option of a committal service at the time of interment.  Families may continue to choose a direct interment and request a committal service at a later time when all restrictions related to the COVID-19 emergency at the cemetery are lifted.
