MONTGOMERY—The Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs (ADVA) has released a Request for Site Selection Proposals for land on which to construct a fifth state veterans home in southeast Alabama. The new veterans home will be approximately 182,000 square feet and provide skilled care for 150–175 elderly or disabled veterans.
The ADVA currently has veterans homes in Bay Minette, Alexander City, Pell, City, and Huntsville, providing care for 704 veterans. In late 2018 a feasibility study confirmed a need for a fifth veterans home. The counties in consideration include: Barbour, Butler, Coffee, Covington, Crenshaw, Dale, Geneva, Henry, Houston, and Pike. These particular counties, or any municipalities or economic development entities located within these counties, may submit a proposal.
Proposals must be physically received by ADVA no later than noon on August 15. There are other submission deadlines associated with the Request for Site Selection Proposals. The State Board of Veterans Affairs will make the final site selection.
